akai SKY is now a hip-hop band

Friday, June 25th, 2010

Osu, Hayashi desu.

So lately we’ve all been in the studio working on new music. I tend to do things ala The Edge from U2 and program all of our songs (and all the various parts) into my pedalboard. The display can only hold so many characters, so I use Hayashi short hand to describe the setting.

A normal person would read the song as “Mug ‘N Diss”. Yup, it’s one of our many hip-hop tracks (j/k!) but I do hope all of you will be hopping in the audience once you hear it. If you want to figure out the real name of the song, think a little Hayashi and a little Japanese and I’m sure you can get it!

Our Day at City Hall

Sunday, May 16th, 2010

Yesterday, akai SKY played at the Asian Heritage Street Celebration. We played at the Civic Center stage which had an amazing view of City Hall.

The stage is just to the left of the photo. It’s kind of amazing to play while looking out on it.

Before going on stage, I had some time to wander around and fair and check out all the booths and eat some fair food. I had a tasty taco made of Korean Bulgogi meat and bought a really large red velvet cupcake that I wasn’t able to finish.

When we arrived at around 3:30PM it was a nice, warm day but by the time we got on stage at 5:00PM, the fog had rolled in and a blustery wind had kicked up. I played bass without being able to feel my fingers! But we had a good crowd that stuck out the cold weather with us, so I can’t complain too much.

Although our EP, Tokyo Beat Riot, hasn’t officially been released yet – we got a batch of our CDs yesterday and decided to sell them after our show. We sold so many! Thanks to everyone that purchased one. And to everyone that wasn’t able – we’ll be making the CD available to own soon enough – no more of this low-quality streaming stuff!

Thank you HyperJam!

Sunday, April 25th, 2010

A huge thank you goes out to HyperJam for having us play this past Saturday. It was great playing with some new friends (Phoenix Ash, Bad Communication) and some old faces (The Shogunate).

As a side note, during our set the police department came and wanted to shut us down for being too loud. This is the conversation verbatim:

Cops: You guys need to shut down, now!
Umi: FUCK YOU!

Okay, so this is how it really went down:

Cops: Can you guys turn it down?
Ray: They are on their last song.
Cops: Oh okay, carry on.

A big thank you goes out to Cindy and Alex who stayed until midnight to watch us play, driving down all the way from Sacramento!

Here is a picture of us at the fine eating established called “Denny’s”.

The Real Ultimate Duo

Osu. Hayashi desu.

I love playing gigs on the road since it gives me the opportunity to meet other like minded musicians. It’s hard to find other musicians with staying power, so I was excited to have the pleasure of meeting up with a long time friend and favorite musician kairu of {mid:night} and Schwarze Sonne fame (http://www.myspace.com/schwarzesonneband).

We get like geeky school boys when talking about music, and we also like taking equally as geeky pictures. Good times!

akai SKY will be playing at HyperJam this coming Saturday so if you are in the Bay Area, please stop by and support!

Blog: Ryuusei’s staring at me naked

Saturday, March 20th, 2010

Osu. Hayashi desu.

Thanks for everyone who went to our show at the Brainwash Cafe in San Francisco this past Friday. Also thanks to our friends at Glass Feather for playing too!

So I had an interesting conversation with Ryuusei the other day. Please see our IM exchange (edited for poor Asian spelling and grammar on my part).
